Mizoram hopes to be topper in literacy rate

Aizawl, March 25, 2006 (PTI): Mizoram could become the most literate State in the country, taking over Kerala which at present, tops the list, State School Education Minister R Lalthangliana said on Friday in the State Assembly.

Stating this during question hour in the State legislature today, Lalthangliana said that the literacy percentage of Kerala and Mizoram were 90.91 and 88.80 respectively in the last census and as per the latest assessment Mizoram has reached 90.27 per cent as of now.

"We have made extra efforts in southern Mizoram's Lawngtlai and western Mamit districts where the literacy rate was comparatively low and we utilised the services of the district administration, other departments and NGOs in the districts to improve the literacy percentage," he said.

Claiming that the efforts were paying rich dividends, the minister said that after some hurdles are cleared the State would soon boast to be the most literate State in the country.
