Japan Airlines Corp. reemploys older employees to restore customer satisfaction

Japan Airlines Corporation's Customer confidence is waning. Reports of falling standards of maintenance due to staff inexperience have pushed the company to reemploy its older workers. Pilots, maintenance engineers and flight attendants will join the company's senior centre. Their goal will be to improve standards of maintenance and pass their skills on to the new generation of airline employees.

Japan Airlines Corp. (JAL) plans to reemploy its older workers after they reach the mandatory retirement age at 60. The company hopes to secure operational safety and customer confidence by keeping its older employees on the payroll. From April, employees aged 55 to 60 will be invited to join the JAL Group Senior Centre Co. When employees reach 60, the mandatory retirement age, they will become JAL Senior Centre employees and will continue working for the centre's parent company, JAL, until they reach 65.

Senior Centre employees will be in charge of maintenance, operations and will teach their skills to younger recruits. The initiative was launched because many maintenance engineers, pilots, and flight attendants have or will soon reach retirement age. The company has recently experienced flight problems due to poor maintenance and it is feared that many younger employees lack the safety reflexes older employees have developed.
